The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has for the third time called on Russia to abandon the Ukrainian nuclear power plant at Zaporiyia, the largest in Europe and under siege since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The agency’s member countries have called on Moscow in a joint resolution to withdraw its personnel «immediately» and to renounce «its unfounded claim of ownership» of the nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine, DPA agency has reported.

The board has also expressed concern that Ukrainian employees of the plant were being pressured by the Russian side and that any arrests had been made.

This is the third IAEA resolution against Russia since the start of the war in February. Russia and China, however, voted against, while seven countries abstained.

The Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has been under Russian occupation since March, a fact that has been repeatedly criticized in recent weeks following an escalation of tension over attacks near the plant and for which Ukraine and Russia accuse each other.

Since September, an IAEA mission has been analyzing the situation at the plant and possible damage caused by military activity on a daily basis.
