Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was discharged on Monday a day after being admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo to undergo a laryngoscopy to remove a leukoplakia from one of his vocal cords.

Last November 12, Lula da Silva had already passed through the hospital for a routine medical check-up, which certified the complete remission of the throat tumor he was diagnosed with in 2011.

Although those tests were satisfactory, the «effort» made during the campaign caused an aphonia that kept him out of activity for a few days, which was used by his political rivals to speculate about his state of health.

Leukoplakia, a white plaque that appears on the mucous membranes and sometimes turns cancerous, was detected in his left vocal cord before his trip to Egypt last week to attend the United Nations climate summit.
