Journalist Pedro Pablo Kumul, a reporter for the Mexican daily ‘AX Noticias’ and broadcaster on Es Amor 105.5 HD, was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while driving his car in the city of Veracruz, in the southeast of the country.

Kamul was driving when he had a problem with the driver of another vehicle, who allegedly chased him and then shot him with a firearm, reported ‘Heraldo de México’.

«We regret the terrible event that happened this afternoon in the town of Castillo where our friend, broadcaster and reporter of this media ‘Ax Noticias’ and Es Amor 104.5 HD, Pedro Pablo, lost his life,» wrote the media ‘Ax Noticias’ through the social network Facebook.

The newspaper has asked the authorities of Veracruz to investigate «thoroughly to find those responsible» and that the crime «does not go unpunished».

In response to the news, the coordinator of the Movimiento Ciudadano party in the Senate, Clemente Castañeda Hoeflich, condemned the murder of the journalist: «Freedom of expression should not be a danger in Mexico or anywhere else, I join the demands for justice».

So far this year, a total of 19 journalists have been murdered in Mexico, according to figures from the Inter-American Press Association.

Last August 18, the organization Article 19 published a report denouncing that in Mexico attacks on the press are registered every fourteen hours, while during López Obrador’s mandate 34 media workers have already been murdered.
