Indonesian emergency services have located alive a six-year-old boy who had been buried by Monday’s earthquake, which has already killed more than 270 people, according to the official balance sheet released on Wednesday.

In particular, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) includes in its count 271 dead, while about 40 people are still missing after the earthquake that originated near the city of Cianjur, in West Java, reports the Indonesian television channel Kompas.

In the last few hours, however, a survivor has been located in the rubble of a house in the town of Nagrek, in the district of Cianjur. The child, named Azka, was found about 40 hours after the first tremors next to the lifeless body of his grandmother.

The authorities estimate that more than 2,300 buildings have been damaged by the earthquake, which has also left more than 1,000 people injured and around 58,000 displaced. Several aid organizations are working together with local authorities to assist the victims.

The director of Humanitarian Emergency Affairs of Wahana Visi Indonesia (World Vision in Indonesia), Yacobus Runtuwene, confirmed in a statement the presence of the NGO in the village of Cigenang, «where almost 100 percent of the houses have been destroyed and most of the victims are children». World Vision has begun distributing tarpaulins and masks as the first emergency aid.
