The United States on Wednesday denounced the wave of recent attacks by Russian forces against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the sole purpose of which is to punish the Ukrainian population as winter approaches.

«These attacks appear to have no military purpose and instead further the Putin regime’s goal of increasing the suffering and death of Ukrainian men, women, and children,» a spokeswoman for the U.S. National Security Council, Adrienne Watson, said in a statement.

Watson also stressed that Russia’s actions demonstrate that Moscow «is willing to increase the risk of a nuclear security incident that could not only further damage Ukraine, but also affect the entire region.»

Finally, he assured that Washington is «in constant contact» with Kiev and at the same time said that Russia «continues to underestimate the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people», so that its attempt to demoralize the population «will fail once again».

«We are working with allies and partners to support Ukraine, including the provision of $1.5 billion in humanitarian assistance, with winterization efforts to distribute heating fuel, generators, shelter repair materials and blankets,» he concluded.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has approved this same Wednesday the sending of a new package of 400 million dollars (about 386 million euros) in defense aid to Ukraine in the middle of Russia’s invasion, which began nine months ago.

The Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has stressed that the United States «continues to support Ukraine by sending additional assistance» to deal with the «relentless attacks by Russia against the vital energy infrastructure» of the country, according to a statement from the State Department.
