The Belgian Federal Police have reinforced the surveillance around the home of the Belgian Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister, the Flemish Liberal Vincent Van Quickenborne, after new evidence in the framework of the investigation which led to the foiling of a plan to kidnap him in September led the authorities to raise the alert.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has indicated to the local media that during the investigation «new elements» have appeared that force to extend the investigations, without giving more details on the content of the findings but confirming that for that reason they have decided to raise the level of surveillance of the house of Van Quickenborne in the Flemish locality of Cortrique (west of Belgium).

At the end of September, several people were arrested for threats against the minister and after locating a vehicle parked in the residential neighborhood where Van Quickenborne’s home is located.

Kalashnikovs, explosive material and other items that could be gas cylinders were found inside the vehicle, which had Dutch license plates, and investigators suggested that it could be an attempted kidnapping planned by organized crime. Four people are still in custody in connection with these events.
