Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday that he intends to seek re-election ahead of elections scheduled for 2025 after spending a year as the country’s head of government.

«Of course I will stand for election again,» he stressed before thanking his supporters for their support. «I have the possibility of winning even more support,» he has indicated.

«I want the ruling coalition to be well enough to get the mandate again,» he has said before assessing in positive terms his management during the last year despite the consequences of the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

In this sense, he emphasized that the government «has managed to be stable in turbulent times with many challenges» and assured that Germany «will withstand the winter well» despite the fact that it cannot count on energy supplies from Russia.

However, the results of a poll released on Thursday and conducted by YouGov for the DPA news agency show that two thirds of Germans are not satisfied with the government’s management.

Thus, 33 percent of those polled said they were «very dissatisfied», while another 33 percent said they were «quite dissatisfied». Only 3 percent said they were «very satisfied» and 23 percent «quite satisfied».

Despite these responses, only 31 percent believe the coalition will break up prematurely, while 47 percent believe it will last until the 2025 federal elections.
