The new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, said on Saturday that although she was sworn in until 2026, «if society and the situation warrants it», they will bring forward the general elections.
The former vice-president has not ruled out calling a new appointment at the polls, after protests have spread throughout the country demanding the closure of Congress and the appointment of new representatives in the Chamber and the vote for a new head of state.
«When the oath of office was sworn in two days ago, it was done until 2026; however, if society and the situation merits it, we will advance the elections,» he has stated in statements to the press picked up by ‘La República’.
Boluarte also made reference to former president Pedro Castillo, who is under arrest accused of the crimes of rebellion and conspiracy for dissolving the Congress and calling elections before a motion of vacancy filed against him.
«I believe that the question of confidence has been the breaking point. I am very sorry that this unexpected situation has occurred. Nobody expected it until last week, in the Council of Ministers,» he said.
