Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksi Makeiev, has claimed Sunday to have received promises from Berlin on the delivery of more weapons to Kiev amid the Russian invasion, unleashed on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
«We have been assured in direct talks of the delivery of more weapons and ammunition. Which ones, will be announced jointly at the appropriate time,» he said in statements to the ‘Welt am Sonntag’ newspaper.
Thus, he said that he does not want to put diplomatic pressure on the German government, although he has asked Berlin for faster deliveries since «there is no time to be waiting for weapons», as reported by the German news agency DPA.
Makeiev has detailed that anti-aircraft systems and ammunition are needed, while revealing that talks are underway for the delivery of ‘Marder’ infantry vehicles and ‘Leopard’ battle tanks. «The decision on this rests with the German government,» he maintained.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far rejected the possibility of delivering ‘Leopard 2’ battle tanks arguing that no other NATO country has so far done so, while the United States said on Friday that it sees no obstacles to such deliveries.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany has said that Berlin has promised that there will be no talks with Russia without Kiev’s consent. «It has been clearly assured that there will be no negotiations with Putin if we don’t want them,» he said.
«Peace in Ukraine cannot be negotiated, it must be fought for. When the (German) chancellor says that Ukraine will receive help as long as it needs it, it means until the last Russian soldier has been withdrawn from our territory, including Donetsk, Lugansk and Crimea, reparations have been paid and war criminals are sentenced,» he has zanelled.
