The Italian Air Force announced early Friday morning that it has found the lifeless body of the pilot of a Eurofighter fighter jet that crashed Tuesday afternoon in the Italian city of Trapani, in the Sicily region.

«Unfortunately, the lifeless body of the pilot of the Eurofighter fighter pilot of the 37th Trapani Wing that crashed yesterday afternoon was identified by rescue teams on the ground near some wreckage of the aircraft,» the Italian Army detailed on its Twitter account.

The pilot, Captain Fabio Antonio Altruda, 33, from Caserta, near Naples, was on his way to the military base at Trapani airport after a training mission when the incident occurred.

Italian authorities have not yet determined the causes of the plane crash, although they have detailed that the Eurofighter crashed to the ground when the pilot was landing.

The impact, which caused neither personal injury nor material damage, occurred in an agricultural area about eight kilometers southeast of the Sicilian air base.

The news of the death has been communicated to the parents of the young soldier, to whom the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Luca Goretti, on behalf of all the Armed Forces, has expressed his deepest condolences and sympathy, as detailed by the Italian Air Force in his letter.
