Ukraine raises death toll of children killed since start of Russian invasion to nearly 450

The Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office on Friday put the number of children killed since the beginning of the Russian invasion, unleashed on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, at about 450.

The agency said in a message on its Telegram account that 449 children have died and 859 have been injured «of varying severity» since the start of hostilities, although it stressed that «the figures are not definitive.»

Thus, he explained that work is underway to establish them in the places of active hostilities, in the temporarily occupied territories and in the liberated territories».

The Prosecutor’s Office has detailed that the Donetsk oblast is the one with the highest number of victims, with 428 dead and wounded. Behind are Kharkov region with 267, Kiev region with 117, Mikolaiv region with 80, Zaporiyia region with 78, Kherson region with 74, Chernobyl region with 68, Lugansk region with 65 and Dnipropetrovsk region with 34.

The latest casualties include the death on Wednesday of two minors aged 14 and 17 near the town of Toretsk, in the Donetsk region, by the explosion of an anti-tank mine.

On the other hand, it said that 3,126 educational institutions have suffered material damage as a result of the attacks by the Russian forces, of which a total of 337 have been «completely destroyed». The Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office has also provided a website and a telephone number for «providing information on war crimes against children».
