Sudanese security forces have fired tear gas and stun grenades on Monday to disperse protesters who have commemorated in Khartoum the fourth anniversary of the December 2018 revolution that toppled dictator Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
Khartoum State Police reported that 124 officers have been injured, as well as around 68 protesters, including an 18-year-old, who had to be taken to hospital after sustaining a thigh injury.
In addition, 67 protesters have been arrested and several police vehicles have been partially damaged, according to a statement reported by the newspaper ‘Sudan Ajbar’.
Thus, the police force «has called in a statement to the demonstrators to adhere to peace and not to breach the security barriers that ensure the sovereign institutions and public facilities».
This Monday thousands of people demonstrated in different parts of Sudan in a call launched by several Khartoum resistance committees to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the overthrow of Al Bashir with Sudanese flags and drums.
The committees are also against a pre-agreement signed this month by security forces and political elites, denouncing the deal as a betrayal of the demands of the uprising, which called for transitional justice and security sector reform.
The demonstrators, in procession, moved to the Presidential Palace in front of a strong security device prepared by the authorities in case of further disturbances.
