The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has assured that his words in Washington leaving the door open to a possible reelection were just «an expression», and has defended that his attention is now focused on other matters.
Within the framework of his visit to the United States, the Ecuadorian president pointed out that the country’s Constitution allowed reelection only once and that he would not shirk this responsibility.
After this, Lasso has been widely criticized in the media for allegedly focusing more on the future and giving continuity to his policies instead of focusing on the current needs of the country.
It is in this context that the president has defended that those words were only «an expression» and that other issues are on his mind, such as the agreements reached in the United States on security and foreign trade.
Lasso, from the CREO Movement and of conservative and liberal ideology, took office at the end of May 2021 after the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced his victory in the second round of the elections against the ‘correista’ candidate Andres Arauz.
