The Somali Army has reported that it has killed 67 suspected members of the Al Shabaab terrorist group on Friday during an operation carried out over the past few hours in the Shabeellaha Dhexe region in the south of the country.
The spokesman and commander of the Armed Forces, Mohamed Tahalil, said in statements reported by SONNA news agency that «a total of 67 Al Shabaab terrorists have been neutralized in an operation planned and led by the army in Balcad, where they were meeting».
Somalia has faced throughout this year an increase in the number of attacks by the Islamist militia Al Shabaab, both in the capital, Mogadishu, and in other areas in the south of the country. The group, which seeks to impose a radical version of Sharia law in Somalia, has also claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in various African countries.
