The Florida Government Fish and Wildlife Commission has issued a statement asking citizens of the U.S. state to stay away from iguanas that are frozen due to the cold snap the country is facing.
«With the arrival of colder temperatures this holiday weekend, you may see non-native green iguanas in a dormant state, where they temporarily lose all muscle control,» the commission has reported on the social network Facebook.
«You may even see them falling from trees. Whatever you do, don’t bring wild green iguanas into your home or car to warm up!» it has warned.
The statement comes after the National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for Saturday morning, with temperatures expected to fall below minus 40 degrees and feel even colder.
Because iguanas are cold-blooded and rely on external heat, when the thermometer drops below 10 degrees Celsius, some enter a hibernation-like state and plummet from trees.
Iguanas are an invasive species in Florida and can be easily spotted in the southern part of the state basking on the roofs of houses, on tree branches, or on lightly traveled streets.
