The death toll from a freezing storm sweeping through parts of the Midwest and eastern United States has risen to 16, after seven U.S. states confirmed deaths in the last few hours.
According to information gathered by the US television network CNN, four people have died in Ohio, three in Kansas, New York and Kentucky, and one each in Missouri, Tenneessee and Wisconsin.
In addition, more than 900,000 homes and businesses have been left without power due to the storms, especially in the Northeast region, which includes states such as New York, Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut.
According to U.S. media reports, weather forecasts indicate that the storm will be accompanied in the coming hours by heavy snowfall, blizzards and even flooding in some parts of the northeast coast. For the moment, there is no respite in sight until after Christmas Day.
On the other hand, the weather conditions have also caused the cancellation of more than 5,000 flights and the delay of another 10,000 flights until Friday.
