More than 40 gang members have been arrested in a raid ordered by El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele in the Tutunichapa community of the capital, San Salvador, in which more than 1,000 soldiers and another 130 police officers participated.
This was stated by the Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro, who recalled that the aforementioned community «has been stigmatized for more than 40 years by criminals who since the time of the war were dedicated to distribute and sell drugs», reports ‘La Prensa Gráfica’.
For his part, Bukele has reported, via his Twitter profile, that the community of La Granjita, the «other famous drug distribution center,» has also been surrounded.
The Salvadoran president has claimed that there has not been «a single death in confrontations» in any of the encirclements. «No military operation in the world has been so clean,» he celebrated.
At the end of March, when El Salvador registered 62 homicides in just one day, the country’s Legislative Assembly approved a state of emergency that has been extended over the months, culminating in the arrest of more than 57,500 alleged gang members.
This measure has earned the country, and specifically President Bukele, criticism not only from national opposition sectors, but also from a large number of human rights organizations, which warn of arbitrary detentions and lack of guarantees for prisoners.
