The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has expressed his satisfaction for the recent reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and Venezuela, after Madrid recovered on Tuesday the figure of ambassador in Caracas.
In a brief message on his Twitter profile, Petro stressed that Venezuela’s return to the Inter-American Human Rights system is «fundamental to consolidate a Latin America united in peace, economic integration and deep democracy».
The Government of Spain approved on Tuesday the appointment of Ramon Santos Martinez as the new ambassador in Caracas, a position vacant after the departure of Jesus Silva in 2020, when Madrid downgraded the relationship to the level of chargé d’affaires as a sign of its disagreement with the situation in Venezuela.
Diplomatic sources told Europa Press that the step was taken due to the fact that 160,000 Spaniards reside in Venezuela, the interests to be defended and the aspirations of the Executive of Pedro Sánchez to support the dialogue between the Venezuelan Government and the opposition.
For his part, Petro made progress in the reestablishment of relations with Venezuela as one of his first decisions as head of the Colombian State and, together with Caracas, agreed to reopen the borders, thus leaving behind years of disagreements.
