Brazil’s outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro has arrived in the United States on what is his last day as Brazilian head of state and shortly before President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is sworn in on Sunday.
Bolsonaro left the Alvorada Palace on Friday afternoon aboard the presidential plane bound for the United States. The plane, which made a brief stopover at Boa Vista International Airport, in Roraima, took off around 19.00 (local time) to land around 23.00 in Orlando, Florida.
With this trip, Bolsonaro will remain out of the country during Lula’s inauguration, so he will not hand over the presidential sash, a symbol of transition and change of power, according to information from the news portal G1.
On Friday morning, the government published in the Official Gazette an authorization for senior officials who plan to become Bolsonaro’s advisors once the transition becomes effective to accompany him on his trip to the United States.
The outgoing president has notably reduced his appearances in the media and social networks over the last few weeks — and especially since his defeat in the elections.
