At least 16 «bandits» have been killed in a Nigerian Army bombing against one of the most dangerous criminal groups in Zamfara state, in the northwest of the country, security sources have confirmed to the PRNigeria portal.
The attack was specifically aimed at the leader of this group, alias «Dankarami» or «Gwaska», considered by the Nigerian Army as a priority target. According to Nigerian media sources, the «kingpin» reportedly survived the attack and is on the run, but has suffered very serious injuries. The exact date of the bombing was not disclosed.
«We have an impeccable source who heard how this terrorist was lamenting the Army’s determination to eliminate him and his family, and how he was complaining bitterly about the attacks,» a Nigerian intelligence source said on condition of anonymity.
The spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, Edward Gabkwet, has limited himself to confirming the exact location of the attack, which occurred in the town of Zurmi, but has not given further details. «The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Marshal Oladayo Amao, wants to warn the terrorists and their sympathizers that they will have no place to hide,» he said.
Zamfara is one of the preferred areas for armed attacks by groups of, as the Government describes them, «bandits»; armed groups specialized in the looting of the populations where they operate and in the kidnapping of minors in exchange for ransom.
Dankarami, a native of Zurmi, is known for terrorizing residents of areas in northern Zamfara and Western Katsina State.
He has carried out a series of attacks against residents of the two states and is reluctant to dialogue, being one of the few terrorist leaders who did not accept the peace agreement extended to the «bandits» by the Zamfara state government in 2019.
