The governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, has assured that if he dies, the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, will be held responsible, days after a court decreed four months of preventive detention against him while the case continues for his alleged participation in the 2019 political crisis.
«What was made clear, is that whether due to my illness or any other reason that causes my death, this will have name and surname, Luis Arce Catacora,» he has expressed through a letter written from the San Pedro prison, in La Paz.
Camacho has insisted once again that his detention for the alleged role he played in Jeanine Áñez’s self-proclamation as president with the support of part of the Armed Forces is a «kidnapping» and that he will continue to fight against the «dictatorship» of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS).
In spite of having mentioned that he has health problems – he has a disease characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels – Camacho has assured that he is «stronger than ever» and that he is not willing to use them to «sell or negotiate his principles» and «even less to betray God and his people».
«Of our struggle for a new Bolivia with democracy and freedom and, above all, the federal Bolivia we dream of,» he has emphasized.
Camacho is the main leader of Santa Cruz, the richest region of Bolivia and historically opposed to the governments of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), scene in the last month of new protests and blockades, this time to oppose the census law of the Government of Luis Arce.
His arrest is motivated by his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that took place after the opposition, supported by the Armed Forces, pressured former president Evo Morales to renounce his victory in the October 2019 elections, whose results were also questioned by the Organization of American States (OAS).
Jeanine Áñez is in jail awaiting trial for the so-called ‘Coup d’Etat I’ case. The self-proclaimed president was the most recognizable media figure of events in which the government also saw the hand of Camacho.
