The president of Peru’s Congress, José Williams Zapata, has urged on Wednesday to «desist from any measure of violence» during the protests called for this week, after demonstrators resumed marches to call for new elections.

Williams Zapata has maintained, in turn, that «the recovery» of the country, «after a period of corruption and inefficiency in the Government, requires a climate of peace and governability», as he has indicated through his profile in the social network Twitter.

These statements coincide with the words of the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, who hours earlier called for peace and unity among Peruvians.

Likewise, Boluarte has remarked that there will be no impunity for the deaths registered in the December demonstrations, reports Andina news agency.

The citizen protests initiated after the dismissal and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo -which stopped as a consequence of Christmas- have so far resulted in at least 27 deaths and numerous wounded.

In the midst of the protests, Peru’s Prime Minister, Alberto Otarola, has announced that in the next few hours they will announce the successor to the resigned head of Peru’s National Intelligence Directorate (DINI), General Juan Carlos Liendo O’Connor.
