The rescue ship ‘Ocean Viking’, of the humanitarian organization SOS Méditerranée, has rescued 37 migrants in distress off the coast of Libya during the last few hours, the group itself has reported on its Twitter account.
The migrants were sailing in an overcrowded boat and some of the passengers had fuel burn injuries. All of them had departed from the North African coast to reach the European Union.
On the other hand, Italian media have reported, also in the last hours, the shipwreck of a migrant boat between the Tunisian coast and the Italian island of Lampedusa with almost three dozen people on board. Three of them died, including a small child.
The Italian Interior Ministry estimates that more than 100,000 people arrived in 2022 on the country’s shores, a figure it considers unacceptable. More than 1,300 migrants and refugees have lost their lives on this route, according to estimates by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
