Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra has summoned Iran’s ambassador following the last two executions of protesters and calls on European Union member states to do the same.
The Dutch minister said he was «appalled» by the «horrific» executions carried out by the Iranian government on Saturday.
«I will summon the Iranian ambassador to underline our grave concern and call on EU member states to do the same,» Hoekstra added via a message on Twitter.
He further stated that the Netherlands already has a fourth package of human rights sanctions against Iran in the pipeline, which it plans to present at the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council.
«Today’s actions by Iran underline the need for an even stronger EU response,» the minister concluded.
This reaction has added to the condemnations of the international community to the death sentence of two other demonstrators participating in the protests for the young Mahsa Amini.
The executed, identified as Mohamed Mehdi Karami and Mohamed Hosseini, were convicted for the death of a security guard during one of the protests in November, as announced by the Iranian judicial agency Mizan.
These executions bring to four the number of protesters executed since the outbreak of the Iranian Kurdish youth protests, which have shaken the country as not seen in decades.
In this regard, the European Union has also declared itself «horrified» this weekend after hearing the news.
«The EU reiterates its firm and principled opposition to the use of capital punishment at all times and in all circumstances; a cruel and inhuman punishment, which does not act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity,» it made known through its external service.
