The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has condemned the «assault on democracy» in Brazil, which he described as «outrageous», and has shown his support for his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
«I condemn the assault on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil. Brazil’s democratic institutions have our full support and the will of the Brazilian people must not be undermined,» Biden said on his official Twitter profile.
The U.S. president also described the situation in Brazil as «outrageous» when asked by journalists during a visit to the U.S. border in El Paso, Texas, as reported by the White House.
Thousands of followers of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have culminated this Sunday the assault on the institutions that they had been demanding in the streets for more than two months. The headquarters of the Congress, the Presidency and the Supreme Court have been assaulted by those calling for a military intervention and the deposition of a leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose legitimacy they do not recognize.
For his part, Bolsonaro, who left the country before the change of mandate on January 1, traveled to Florida, where he remains to this day, without having pronounced himself for the moment on the attack on the institutions.
