U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday pledged resources for the U.S.-Mexico border after making his first visit to El Paso, Texas.
«They need a lot of resources, and we’re going to get them for them,» he said when asked after his visit to the border, where he visited Border Patrol agents.
The U.S. president assured that his government «is using the tools available to limit illegal migration, expand legal migration channels and increase security».
«Our problems at the border did not arise overnight. And they won’t be solved overnight. But we can come together to fix this broken system,» he said, calling for unity between Democrats and Republicans to solve the immigration crisis.
«We can secure the border and fix the migration process so that it is orderly, fair, secure and humane,» the president added.
Biden was greeted by Texas Governor Gregg Abbott, a Republican, upon his arrival at the El Paso airport, who asked him in a hand-delivered letter to act immediately to stop the migration.
Abbott — who has also criticized Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, accusing him of transporting migrants to the border — said that in his letter he describes «the case that your refusal to enforce border laws» has caused in the state he governs, Texas, demanding that the Biden Administration «step forward to take swift action,» as reported by Bloomberg.
However, the president has indicated that he «has not yet read the letter», as reported by the White House through a statement.
After the meeting with Abbott, Biden visited agents at the border crossing, one of the busiest ports of entry in the United States, and spoke with senior officials of a migrant assistance center funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
However, journalists accompanying the President have criticized that he has limited himself to talking to border control personnel, rather than interacting with migrants.
A senior official explained that «there were simply no (migrants) at the center when he arrived, completely coincidentally,» according to CNN.
