The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (ABRAJI) has denounced and condemned the aggressions suffered by several media workers by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro while covering the assault they perpetrated on the headquarters of the three branches of government.
At least five journalists were assaulted this Sunday in Brasilia while carrying out their work, said ABRAJI, which also denounced the theft of the equipment of several reporters by the assailants.
ABRAJI has told that a photographer was assaulted by a group of Bolsonaro’s acolytes while shouting that they were going to «take Brazil». This association regretted that attacks on the press by the ultra-right have become a constant these last two years in the face of the passivity of the authorities.
In total, 77 attacks have been registered against press workers in Brazil in the last two years «without the government and the security forces having taken adequate measures», says the press release.
Thousands of followers of the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro have assaulted this Sunday the headquarters of the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia, after several months of mobilizations and violent protests due to their discontent with the victory at the polls of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
As a consequence, Lula has decreed the federal intervention of Brasília to assume security powers. In a joint communiqué, the three state powers assaulted have stressed their «unity» to confront this type of attacks which they have described as «terrorism» and «coups».
