U.S. President Joe Biden has invited his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to Washington after conveying to him the «unwavering support of the United States» following the storming of the Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.

Biden conveyed to Lula «the unwavering support of the United States for Brazil’s democracy and the free will of the Brazilian people, as demonstrated in the recent presidential elections in Brazil, won by President Lula,» according to a joint statement.

The U.S. president also reiterated, in a telephone conversation, his «condemnation of violence and attacks on democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power».

«The two leaders have pledged to work closely together on issues facing the United States and Brazil, including climate change, economic development, and peace and security,» the missive continues.

Separately, both leaders have announced that Lula will visit Washington in early February, after Biden invited him to visit the capital «for in-depth consultations on a shared agenda of broad scope.»

The Brazilian president has subsequently publicly thanked Biden for his «concern and solidarity», as well as «his willingness to maintain a permanent dialogue» between both countries in order to «strengthen democracy».
