Amnesty International has urged the Peruvian authorities to «immediately» cease the «excessive use of force» against civilians who continue to demonstrate against the government of Dina Boluarte, after more than 40 people have already lost their lives in protests.
For the NGO, the end of repression is called to be a «first step» to get out of the current political and social crisis, which this week alone has left 18 dead, including a policeman attacked by a mob in the region of Puno.
Amnesty’s director for the Americas, Erika Guevara Rosas, warned in a statement that «the high number of deaths» and «the gravity of the events» deserve accountability at the «highest level», and called on the Attorney General’s Office to also investigate those who «order» or «tolerate» the excesses.
The head of the NGO in Peru, Marina Navarro, shares this unease: «State repression against demonstrators and the loss of human lives is worsening the crisis». In this sense, she pointed out that «the people should not have to pay the cost of the political crisis that the country is going through» after the December change in the Presidency.
Amnesty International, which calls for a review of the work of the security forces at all hierarchical levels, has questioned the state of emergency decreed almost a month ago and has demanded that any possible violation of human rights during this time be clarified.
