One of those arrested for their participation on Sunday in the assault on the Planalto Palace, located in the Three Powers Square in Brasília, has assured that some members of the Brazilian Armed Forces tried to help them escape from the building before they were arrested.
The testimony of the alleged attacker, a man who arrived in the Brazilian capital from Santa Catarina with 48 other people to «protest against corruption in the country and the lack of transparency in the electoral processes», as he explained, has come as the police continue with the interrogation of dozens of detainees.
Thus, he pointed out that «he did not even pay for the trip» to Brasilia, but that the transfer was paid for «through donations made by the Brazilian population», according to information from the G1 television channel.
In relation to the assault on the palace, he pointed out that an Army commander urged those present to «use an emergency exit» shortly before the Military Police troops arrived in the area to carry out the arrests.
In this sense, he has clarified that this same commander interposed himself between the riot police and the demonstrators so that «the building would not suffer further damage and no one would be injured». He also explained that he and other assailants knelt before the arrival of the police and asked the army for protection before singing the national anthem.
The Armed Forces, for their part, have indicated that for the moment there is no evidence to corroborate this version or to confirm its veracity, nor «has it been formally notified».
