Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has opted not to leave the country as investigations continue into last week’s coup plot and has sent Economy Minister Fernando Haddad and Environment Minister Marina Silva to the Davos Economic Forum.
«Despite the recent terrible events in Brasilia, we will have a strong Brazilian ministerial delegation, led by the Minister of Finance», emphasized the president of the Davos Forum, Borge Brende, who said that Silva’s presence will serve to highlight the problems in the Amazon.
For its part, the Ministry of Finance emphasized that after the violent events in Brasilia, greater interest has been generated by Brazil’s presence at this forum, where it intends to show that the frustrated coup of January 8 «is now history» and that it is still focused on economic recovery.
In addition to Lula, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin will not attend as initially planned, as he will remain in Brazil to finalize the last details and names of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce, which he heads, according to the news portal Metrópoles.
The Brazilian government plans that President Lula will resume his international agenda next week with a first trip to Argentina, where he will meet with his counterpart, Alberto Fernandez, on January 23. In February, he intends to visit the White House and Portugal in April. China is the other country where he is expected to arrive in the first half of 2023.
