Meaza Ashenafi, the chief justice of Ethiopia’s Supreme Court, as well as her deputy, Solomon Areda, have sent a letter of resignation to the House of Representatives of their «own free will» after five years in their respective positions.
Shortly thereafter, the Ethiopian House of Representatives approved with a majority vote their replacements, Professor Tewodros Mihret Kebede as president and Judge Abeba Embiale as vice-president. The candidates were also sworn in by the members of the Ethiopian Assembly.
The resigned vice president of the Supreme Court has recently been appointed part-time judge of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal for the period 2023-2030, the ‘Addis Standard’ newspaper has reported.
For her part, Ashenafi in 2018 became the first woman to be appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court and worked as an advisor on women’s rights issues at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, based in Addis Ababa.
