Nine people were publicly flogged Tuesday at a stadium in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan after being charged with theft and homosexuality by the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

The Ahmad Shahi stadium was the scene of the punishment inflicted by the Taliban on nine men, who received between 35 and 39 lashes, a punishment that is being reapplied in Afghanistan after the arrival of the fundamentalists a year and a half ago, despite the condemnation of the international community.

The Afghan channel Amu TV has published some images in which it can be seen how hundreds of people assisted to the punishments that the sharia, the strictest interpretation of the Islamic law and that has already been used for the execution in a firing squad of a person last December.

The irruption of the Taliban in Afghanistan has been viewed with concern by the international community, which for the moment has not recognized the new government led by the fundamentalists who have broken all the promises they made when they came to power.

Since then they have enacted new laws to prevent access to education for girls and women, as well as other measures that prevent them from having freedom of movement, or even working in humanitarian agencies, on which almost the entire Afghan population depends.
