Former U.S. President Donald Trump is already preparing his return to Twitter and Facebook, two social networks from which he was removed two years ago following the assault launched by thousands of his followers on Capitol Hill and with a view to gaining presence in his new race for the White House, with a view to the November 2024 elections.
The arrival of tycoon Elon Musk to Twitter meant for Trump the recovery of the account. His last message was published on January 8, 2020, to confirm that he would not attend the inauguration of his successor, Joe Biden, but he still has 87.7 million followers.
The second front, still to be resolved, is that of Meta, Facebook’s parent company. The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg had promised to deal with the case in the coming weeks and the Trump campaign has formally requested Meta to unblock the account.
«We believe that the veto of Trump’s account has drastically distorted and inhibited public discourse,» reads a letter sent Tuesday and picked up by NBC News. The missive does not raise potential court litigation, although sources close to Trump consulted by the cited network do put it on the table.
The campaign recalls that Meta’s current head of global affairs, former British politician Nick Clegg, said in October that he had to be «very careful» when it came to «silencing political voices.» «We agree,» aides to the former White House tenant note.
For the campaign of Trump, who wants to become the Republican candidate for the presidency again, «every day that his voice remains silent represents an inappropriate interference in the American political and electoral process.»
Clegg has spoken from Davos (Switzerland), on the occasion of the World Economic Forum, and has insisted that his company plans to decide «quickly» the future of Trump’s accounts, according to the DPA agency. The former British deputy prime minister recalled that the initial veto was only valid for two years.
TRUTH SOCIAL Trump tried to circumvent the veto of the big social networks by founding his own platform, Truth Social, which he has tried to promote as a loudspeaker but which has proved to have a smaller reach. It currently has less than 5 million followers, a far cry from the nearly 88 million on Twitter and the 34 million it amassed on Facebook.
One of the questions his campaign has already begun to debate is not only when Trump will return to Twitter but also how. According to NBC News, his advisors have already begun to work on that possible first ‘tweet’ that would return the New York magnate to the forum where the great political leaders of the world are already.
