NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the meeting of the U.S.-led Contact Group for Ukraine at the military base in Ramstein, Germany, will be the occasion to confirm further military support to Kiev, with «heavy and modern weaponry» in the midst of intensified fighting with the Russian army in the east of the country.
Speaking from the Davos Economic Forum in Switzerland, NATO’s political chief assured that the main message coming out of the meeting in Ramstein will be that «there will be more support and more advanced support, heavier weapons and more modern weapons» to Ukraine.
«This is a fight for our values, it is a fight for democracy and we just have to prove that democracy beats tyranny and oppression,» he said, insisting on his call to the allies to provide more advanced weaponry and air defense systems.
In the view of the former Norwegian prime minister, it is «extremely important» that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not win the war in Ukraine. «Partly because it will be a tragedy for the Ukrainians, but it will be very dangerous for all of us. Because then the message to authoritarian leaders is that when they use brutal force, when they violate international law, they get what they want,» he has warned.
This message comes in the midst of the international debate on how to respond to the military demands of Kiev, which is asking the global community to send tanks to continue the fighting against Russia in the Donbas region.
Germany, manufacturer of the ‘Leopard’ battle tanks, is in the West’s sights for having to authorize the shipment of tanks to a third country, an issue that has generated internal tensions in the country on the convenience of taking the step and also with European partners such as Poland and the Baltics, who demand decisive actions from Berlin to stop Russian troops.
