Peru’s Attorney General’s Office has reminded the country’s president, Dina Boluarte, that it is an independent judicial body and that it is competent to investigate crimes, all this after the president stated that the violence registered during the protests in the country «will not go unpunished».
«The powers of the State, constitutional bodies and public and private institutions are reminded that the Public Prosecutor’s Office is an autonomous institutional body,» reads a statement released by the Prosecutor’s Office, led by Attorney General Patricia Benavides.
In the missive, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has reiterated that «the function of investigating crime is a constitutional competence» of the Prosecutor’s Office, which «is fulfilled with autonomy, independence and without any type of political, economic or media interference».
In this sense, the judicial body has defended its commitment to act objectively in defense of legality and the Human Rights of all Peruvians.
The statement comes a day after Boluarte charged in a televised speech against the violent demonstrators in ‘La Toma de Lima’, assuring that «the full weight of the law» will fall on them.
Specifically, the president warned that the Government «will act within the framework of the Constitution» against those who have caused acts of violence, assuring that the events occurred in some points of Lima are not a peaceful march.
«You want to break the rule of law, you want to generate chaos and disorder. And within that chaos and disorder, you want to take the power of the nation», said Boluarte.
