
Egyptian tycoon Safwan Thabet and his son, Seif el Din, have been released after two years imprisoned without trial on terrorism charges, the family said in a statement.
The tycoon was chairman and CEO of the Juhayna company, which has been a leader in the dairy and canned juice market in Egypt for decades. Juhayna is one of the most important Egyptian exporters to the Middle East, the United States and Europe Thabet had been in custody since December 2020 for allegedly being linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood organization — in fact, he is the grandson of one of the movement’s historical figures, Hassan al Hudaybi — and for threatening state security by «instigating attacks against the army and the police. Seif el Din was arrested for the same case in February 2021.
The Muslim Brotherhood, one of the most important Muslim organizations in the world, was outlawed after the coup d’état carried out in 2013 by the current president, Abdelfatá al Sisi, by which his predecessor, the Islamist Mohamed Mursi, was overthrown and imprisoned.
The releases were announced by Mariam Thabet, daughter of Safwan and sister of Seif el Din, in a statement reported by the daily ‘Al Ahram’.
