A group of armed men killed the wives and five children of a local leader in the northeastern Nigerian state of Taraba, who collaborated with the government and had spoken out against kidnappings by the numerous «bandit» groups that plague the country.
The attack took place on Saturday night in Jalingo, the state capital, where the local chief’s relatives were first abducted before being killed, police sources confirmed to Premium Times.
Residents of the town have explained that the assailants were after the chief for cooperating with security agencies in the area and with the local authorities’ group of paid vigilantes who are fighting bandits.
The chief was also known for asking residents of the area not to pay ransoms for the kidnappings of the outlaws.
The mortal remains of the traditional ruler’s family members were deposited at the district headquarters in Mutumbiyu for Islamic burial.
