A U.S. F-22 fighter jet shot down an unidentified flying object detected in northern Canada on Saturday after receiving the go-ahead from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
«I have ordered to shoot down any unidentified object that has violated Canadian airspace. NORAD has shot down an object over the Yukon,» Trudeau explained on Twitter in reference to the U.S. military’s North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
«Canadian and U.S. aircraft were mobilized. A U.S. F-22 successfully fired on the object,» Trudeau added. «I spoke this afternoon with President (Joe) Biden. Canadian forces will recover and analyze the wreckage of the object,» he said.
This new object was reportedly flying at high altitude over the Yukon Territory, a region bordering Alaska. NORAD had previously confirmed that it was tracking an unidentified flying object in northern Canada, but no further details have been released at this time.
At the moment it is not known if this new object is related to the Chinese spy balloon shot down last week in the Atlantic after crossing North America or to another object shot down on Friday over Alaska. China claims that the first one was a weather balloon that strayed by chance.
However, on Friday Washington announced sanctions against six Chinese agencies linked to China’s aerospace industry in response to the presence of this balloon and Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a visit to China.
