The U.S. Army announced Sunday the killing of 12 suspected members of the jihadist organization Al Shabaab in Galmudug state, which covers the country’s eastern coast.
The bombing occurred Friday near Hobyo, some 475 kilometers northeast of the capital Mogadishu, where Somali forces are waging an offensive to maintain control of the area.
This announcement comes in the context of the «total war» declared by President Hassan Shaykh Mohamud against the terrorist group, which in recent weeks has been concentrating on Galmudug.
In this regard, the commander of the Somali National Army infantry regiment, General Mohamed Tahalil Bihi, reported at least 117 jihadists killed during the operations of the last hours in the Mudug area, in the center of the state, particularly in the locality of Doonyaale.
«We are currently pursuing what is left of them (the jihadists), who have fled to the forest after these heavy losses,» Bihi said in a statement carried by the digital portal Garowe On Line.
