The right-wing bloc led by the Brothers of Italy, the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, emerges strengthened from the regional elections held in the regions of Lazio and Lombardy, in the first major social test since the general elections of October 2022.
In the two regions, key because they include the cities of Rome and Milan, the first projections published by the public channel Rai anticipate more than half of the votes for the alliance formed by Brothers of Italy, Matteo Salvini’s League and Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi’s formation.
The candidates of the conservative bloc – Francesco Rocca, in Lazio, and Attilio Fontana, in Lombardy – are clearly ahead of the representatives of a left-wing alliance headed by the Democratic Party (PD), which would have remained below 35 percent.
However, the data have also been marked by the low turnout, since in the case of Lombardy it plummeted to 41.6 percent and in Lazio it was even lower, at 37.2 percent. PD leaders have assumed that part of their defeat derives from the low turnout at the polls.
On the right, on the other hand, the dissemination of the first estimates has already given rise to celebrations. «Victory,» Salvini has proclaimed on his social networks, in a message of thanks to the citizens of the two regions that were called to vote.
