The governor of the U.S. state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, signed controversial legislation Wednesday to allow the transfer of migrants to any point in the United States in an attempt to control illegal migration.
«I am pleased to have signed legislation to continue the program to transport illegal aliens to sanctuary cities,» he has indicated in a message on Twitter, adding that Florida uses «all available tools» to protect its citizens from President Joe Biden’s «open border policies.»
The controversial legislation, approved by the state House of Representatives with 77 Republican votes in favor against 34 against, allows the Florida governor’s office to transport migrants to any part of the country, as reported by CNN.
Among the changes introduced by the Republicans is that the program will now be controlled by the Florida Department of Emergency Management and not by the Department of Transportation, as before, so that the DeSantis Administration will be able to award millions of dollars in contracts for that purpose.
About 50 migrants were sent last year by Florida’s governor to the state of Massachusetts and then taken to the Cape Cod military base, an action that prompted lawsuits and questions about the possible violation of state law.
