The Somali Army on Wednesday took control of several towns in the Galgadud region (center) after fighting with members of Al Shabaab, amid the reinforcement of offensives against the terrorist group, which maintains links with Al Qaeda.
According to information gathered by the Somali news agency SONNA, the offensive was carried out by the Army together with several local militias in the localities of Barag Shaykh Aamir, Alihele and Ali Ahmed, all of them located in the district of Galad.
Security sources quoted by this media stressed that the terrorists have left these localities after causing material damage to them, including the destruction of communication equipment. Offensives continue in the area, especially in Elbur district.
Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by President Hassan Shaykh Mohamud, who pledged on taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
