Prison authorities have denied the conditional release requested by the lawyers of former athlete Oscar Pistorius, convicted of the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and who had requested his release from prison after serving more than half of the time of incarceration.
The former athlete was initially sentenced to five years in prison for the murder of his partner, but the Supreme Court reviewed the case and elevated the crime committed to the rank of murder, which implied a sentence of at least 15 years in prison.
Pistorius ended up sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison after deducting the period of house arrest, in a sentence he began serving in 2017. In August last year, he began participating in a rehabilitation program to bring forward his release from prison.
Upon his arrival at the hearing, Steenkamp’s mother, June, lamented that the former athlete had not complied with the terms of the program and stated her flat rejection of the request. He is neither remorseful nor rehabilitated», according to statements reported by the South African state broadcaster (SABC).
Pistorius shot and killed his partner on Valentine’s Day. The former athlete argued that he mistook her for an intruder, but the court eventually dismissed his version of events and ruled that Pistorius acted with full knowledge when he opened fire on Steenkam.
The former athlete will not be able to reapply for parole until August next year.
