A group of suspected »bandits» have abducted about 80 youths who were collecting timber in Nigeria’s northeastern Zamfara state, their relatives have confirmed.
The incident occurred at around 08.00 on Friday morning near Wanzamai village, when the youths were collecting firewood, the parents of some of the abductees told the BBC’s Hausa service.
The Nigerian government designates as »bandits», in general, the criminal groups operating in various parts of the country, with special incidence in Zamfara and Kaduna, and engaged in kidnapping and racketeering.
In November 2021, the Nigerian High Court declared these organizations as »terrorist groups» to facilitate military operations against their members.
In this case, the »bandits» have not yet demanded ransom for the youths, so the parents remain on standby.
