A total of eleven migrants have died and one more has survived following the sinking of a boat in waters near the Moroccan town of Guelmim, close to the Canary Islands.
Among the fatalities are seven men and one woman, all of Moroccan nationality, as well as a woman and a man accompanied by a two-year-old child from sub-Saharan Africa, reports the Moroccan media Yabiladi.
According to several Moroccan media, the aim was to reach the coasts of the Canary Islands. The authorities have opened an investigation.
The Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras published a report in December denouncing that more than 11,200 migrants have died or disappeared since 2018 trying to reach Spain.
It also picks up a significant increase in the number of migrants resorting to the Atlantic route due to increased patrols and security in the Mediterranean.
