At least three Nigerian military personnel were killed and four others were wounded when a bomb exploded as a National Guard vehicle passed through the village of Djalori, located in the Diffa region (south), in the Lake Chad basin.
For the moment there is no claim of responsibility for the attack, confirmed by local and security sources quoted by the Nigerian news portal ActuNiger. Photographs of the vehicle hit are also circulating on social networks showing that it has been completely destroyed.
The incident takes place just a few days after the death of five soldiers following an attack by armed individuals on a convoy of miners near the Tagharaba-Aelit road in the Agazez region (north), an incident which also resulted in five wounded and two missing.
Niger is facing a terrorist threat in the west from the Al Qaeda branch in Mali, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). Likewise, the Diffa region, bathed by Lake Chad, is the scene of relatively frequent attacks by Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA).
