At least three Palestinians were shot and wounded after being shot at by Israeli security forces near a military checkpoint south of the West Bank city of Nablus, according to Palestinian sources, an incident blamed by Israel for an armed attack on soldiers deployed in the area.
The director of the Palestinian Red Crescent Emergency Department, Ahmad Yibril, said that Israeli forces opened fire on a vehicle, wounding its three occupants, as reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Yibril said that two were wounded in the lower extremities and were transferred to a Palestinian hospital, while the third was shot in the neck and was detained by the Israeli military, who later transferred him to an Israeli hospital.
The IDF said in a message on its Twitter social network account that «several armed assailants approached a checkpoint near Nablus» and added that «after one of the suspects opened fire, soldiers responded and neutralized the assailant.» «The suspect was evacuated for medical attention. There are no IDF injuries,» he added.
The event came less than a week after the killing of two Palestinian militiamen during an Israeli army operation in Nablus, amid a spike in tensions in the area in recent months following several terror attacks since mid-March, which led to increased operations by Israeli forces in the West Bank.
