At least 32 people have been killed when a suspension bridge collapsed over a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat, local medical sources tell the ‘Times of India’.
The Morbi suspension bridge, over the Machchhu River, was a historic structure that was restored and reopened to the public just four days ago for the Gujarati New Year celebration.
According to media witnesses, some 500 people, including women and children, were crossing the bridge in mid-collapse.
According to the same sources, dozens of people were reportedly submerged and several could still be trapped under the debris.
