At least 60 people have been killed when a suspension bridge collapsed over a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat, state Minister for Housing and Rural Development Brijesh Merja has confirmed to the Times of India.
The suspension bridge at Morbi, over the Machchhu River, was a historic structure that was restored and reopened to the public just four days ago to celebrate the Gujarati New Year.
The MP for Rajkot, Mohan Kundariya, estimates the number of injured to be around 100, although this figure could not be verified.
According to eyewitnesses, some 500 people, including women and children, were crossing the bridge in the middle of the collapse.
According to the same sources, dozens of people were reportedly submerged and several could still be trapped under the debris.
